Restaurant Ostrovo
Macedonia
At a glance
Restaurant Ostrovo occupies one of the two islands at the springs of the Crn Drim River, on the southeast side of Lake Ohrid near the monastery of St. Naum Ohridski. The setting combines a lakeside restaurant with the natural surroundings of the springs, making it a suitable stop for a meal during a visit to the southern end of the lake in North Macedonia.
The kitchen focuses on Macedonian traditional food, with a particular connection to the Ohrid region. The menu includes familiar regional dishes such as beans prepared in a traditional style, snails cooked in an earthen pot, spinach pie, a pour-and-bake pie, stuffed cabbage leaves and stuffed peppers. Fish has an important place as well, with trout, eel and carp among the choices, together with seafood. The selection gives the restaurant a broad regional character, covering hearty home-style dishes as well as freshwater fish.
Indoor dining accommodates up to 90 people, while the terrace provides additional seating. During spring and summer, the island functions as a garden restaurant with space for a much larger number of diners. The outdoor setting is closely tied to the character of the venue, with meals taking place beside the clear waters and spring-fed landscape of the Crn Drim.
Restaurant Ostrovo is also associated with boat cruises along roughly 700 metres of the Crn Drim springs. The route follows the source waters of Lake Ohrid and passes an area known for underwater springs, aquatic life and seasonal sightings of small water turtles. A boat outing can therefore complement a meal, particularly for visitors exploring the St. Naum area.
The restaurant suits diners looking for traditional regional cooking in a nature-based setting, as well as larger parties needing substantial indoor or outdoor capacity. It also works as a stop for guests combining lunch or dinner with a monastery visit, a lakeside excursion or a cruise on the springs. The atmosphere changes with the season, from terrace dining to the larger open-air garden arrangement during the warmer months.
