Things you’ll want to know

Hey, if you’re planning to eat your way through Macedonia, here’s something from my own trips. The best meals often happen in the afternoon, especially on weekends, when families gather for a big lunch. If you follow that rhythm, you’ll catch the freshest food and best vibes. Also, don’t shy away from markets; Skopje’s Green Market is fantastic for grabbing fresh produce or trying local cheese and honey on the spot.

One personal favorite spot is "Kafenio An" in Bitola , it doesn’t scream touristy, but they nail the homemade pies and strong Macedonian coffee. Totally worth a visit if you pass through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about eating out in Macedonia? Here’s some local insight.

Look for traditional taverns, especially in neighborhoods like Debar Maalo in Skopje or old town areas in Bitola and Ohrid. Don’t miss dishes like ajvar, tavče gravče, and fresh grilled fish near the lakes. Locals usually eat at these places, which means the food’s the real deal.
Absolutely. Macedonian cuisine has plenty of vegetable-based dishes like shopska salad, bean stews, and filo pastries filled with cheese or spinach. Most traditional restaurants can recommend vegetarian-friendly meals if you ask. Markets like Skopje’s Green Market are also great for fresh veggie snacks.
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Usually, people leave around 10% if the service is good. Sometimes locals just round up the bill. If you’ve had a great experience, the waiter will notice and appreciate the gesture.
Most restaurants close by 10 or 11 pm, though places in Skopje or Ohrid stay open later, especially in the summer. If you’re out late, look for kafanas or bars – they often have snacks and stay open until the early hours.
Big cities like Skopje and Bitola have a decent range of international restaurants including Italian, Asian, and even burger joints. But outside the cities, it’s mostly traditional Macedonian food. If you want pizza or sushi, your best bet is Skopje.
If you’re aiming for popular spots, especially on weekends or during festivals, a reservation is a smart move. Small local places often don’t accept bookings, so getting there early helps. For lakeside restaurants in Ohrid during summer, book ahead if you want a good seat by the water.
