Italian Restaurants in Macedonia

Italian food isn’t as rare in Macedonia as you might think. You’ll find cozy places in Skopje’s Debar Maalo or just off the main square serving up hearty, straightforward pasta and wood-fired pizzas that don’t try too hard but taste just right.

I’ve got a soft spot for a small place near the Vardar that’s been around for years, nothing fancy on the outside, but their carbonara is the kind you don’t forget. And if you’re in Bitola during summer, there’s a tiny trattoria where you can sit outside and watch the old bazaar while nibbling on really fresh bruschetta.

Heads up if you want a true Italian meal: skip the super touristy spots in the city center. Instead, look for restaurants where the locals grab their Sunday dinners. Oh, and don’t be shy about ordering a bottle of something good to go with your meal , Macedonia has some surprisingly decent wines that pair nicely with Italian dishes. Just ask your server for a recommendation.

A local’s quick tips

If you’re craving real Italian food in Macedonia, don’t just stick to the city center of Skopje. Walk a bit into Debar Maalo or Čair neighborhoods where you’ll find restaurants opened by people with Italian roots or those who’ve spent time learning the craft in Italy.

One local favorite is ‘La Trattoria’ near the old bazaar – they serve a brilliant gnocchi that’s softer and lighter than you’d expect, a real crowd-pleaser among locals. Pro tip: mid-week evenings are quieter and you’ll get better service and maybe a chat with the owner. Also, try pairing your meal with a local Macedonian Vranec wine; it complements Italian flavors better than you’d imagine.
