Description

This route connects the historical and cultural locations of the geopark, such as the historic Arkadi monastery, Ancient Eleutherna with its impressive archaeological park and museum, the hamlet of Margarites, with its renowned ceramics. Along the way it crosses important environmental and geological locations, such as gorges, ravines, and cypress tree clusters. It is part of the E4 European Long Distance Path. Starting from Arkadi we follow the asphalt road and after leaving the rainwater reservoir on our right behind us, we reach the hill ridge. To our right is a small plateau that is the starting point of a trail that is hard to make out, heading northeast, which then meets dirt roads amidst olive groves, leading to the asphalt road just before a small church at the western exit of Eleutherna village. After crossing the village, we turn south, following the western bank of a ravine and then the well-defined old trail heading north, which leads us to the foot of the rocky slope outside the enormous carved reservoirs of Ancient Eleutherna. Leaving behind Ancient Eleutherna and the beautiful ravine, we start our eastern uphill hike to the small chapel at the peak of the slope, where we encounter the asphalt road that leads us north from the small traditional hamlet of Kato Tripodo, where we find the old trail that descends into the lush ravine and then rises out into Margarites village.
