It is established for the purpose of collecting, protection and research of the cultural heritage of the city and its environs. The museum is located inside what's left of the old railway station that was partly destroyed in the tragic Skopje earthquake of 27- th July 1963. It's a cultural institution that is founded in 1949 and it's a complex museum that encompasses the fields of archeology, history, ethnology, art history. The very interesting fact about this museum is the clock in its the exterior part that shows 5:17 the time when the disastrous earthquake happened.
